Detroit Moxie's Weekend Roundup

There are a gazillion things going on in Detroit this weekend! I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to keep up.

But first…

The winners of the $50 gift cards to Somerset Collection CityLoft courtesy of Quicken Loans are:

Phill Tran dreams of a Jamba Juice so he can get his Chocolate Mood kick.

And

Craig Hennigan wants to see an innovative, worker-owned restaurant in downtown Detroit.

Congrats to Phil and Craig!

Now get out there and enjoy all the cool things there are to do in Detroit.

Weekend Roundup

1. Maker Faire Detroit - In its second year, this is the best new tradition in Detroit. A lifesize Mousetrap, the Coke and Mentos guys, hackerspaces, robots and more! July 30-31.

2. Ignite Great Lakes - A semi-geek event where presenters show their personal and professional passions in 5 minute talks. Ignite is always a fabulous and fun experience and this time the best of the Midwest will be showcased. July 30th.

3. Canfield Street Market (Facebook link) - Handmade and vintage goods plus sidewalk sales and summer games. July 30th.

4. 71 Pop - The grand opening of a new Detroit pop shop featuring emerging, student and low-income artists. July 30th.

Critical Mass is this Friday. Gather with your bike around 6:30 at Trumbull and Warren.

Also, Tunde Wey has decided to make his mark on the city and is running an event called Big F Bikes. It's a bike ride/bar crawl to benefit the 4th Street farm. Helmets are required or signing a waiver for this ride. It starts at 5pm on Saturday at Northern Lights Lounge where the short film "Detroit Bike City" will be shown.

Lastly, the International Workers of the World, aka the Wobblies, are hosting a panel on struggles against current austerity measures. Panelists include a member of the "Lansing 13" (people arrested in Lansing for their peaceful protest actions), a student of Catherine Ferguson Academy, and local activists and organizers. This happens Friday at 6pm at the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, 111 E. Kirby, Detroit, MI.

Thanks again for the gift card!!

Sterlingfest in Sterling Heights! It is a great 3 day event that runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It features an art fair, local restaurants, midway carnival, and music. Definitely something for everyone. It is at Dodge Park.
