1. 2014 Academy Award® Nominated Short Films - Head to the Detroit Film Theatre to catch the Oscar nominated shorts—both animated and live-action—in one sitting. January 31—February 2.

2. Palmer Park WinterFest - Bundle up for family fun at one of Detroit's historic neighborhoods. Activities include a doggie fashion parade, horse and carriage rides, skiing, snow shoeing and ice skating. February 2nd.

3. Black Comic Book Day - The Detroit Public Library plays local host to this national annual event with 20 vendors, all from the Michigan area. February 1st.

4. Shiver on the River - Belle Isle is the place to be on Saturday! The Belle Isle Aquarium, Belle Isle Conservatory, Belle Isle Nature Zoo, Belle Isle Boat Club, Coast Guard Station and Dossin Museum will be open from 10 am to 3 pm. February 1st.

5. Ann Arbor Folk Festival - This fundraiser for The Ark features both well-known and up-and-coming artists. Actor and musician Jeff Daniels is scheduled to take the stage on Saturday. January 31—February 1.

1. North American International Auto Show - There are only a few more days to check out the new models and concept cars at the Detroit Auto Show. Through January 26.

2. 7th Annual Fire & Ice Festival - Head to downtown Rochester for ice sculptures, fireworks, carriage rides, ice skating, tube sled runs and much more. January 24—26.

3. Bat Zone Tours - Cranbrook Institute of Science is home to our nocturnal friends! See bats, flying squirrels, owls, sugar gliders, and a two-toed sloth! January 25—26.

4. Letterpress Workshop - Design and print your own Valentine's Day cards and learn the basics of hand typesetting at the Green Garage. January 25th.

5. 63 Minutes (Of Random Balance) - Friday Night Live at the DIA features performance artist Satori Circus for "an evening of madcap antics, stoic tableau, and familiar narratives that have psychic and topical resonance with our daily lives." January 24th.

1. Legendary ConFusion - Now in its 40th year, this fan-run science fiction and fantasy convention features panel discussions, presentations, concerts and parties. January 17—19.

2. North American International Auto Show - Events have been happening all week but the Detroit Auto Show finally opens to the public this Saturday. Check out the new models and concept cars in the newly renovated Cobo Center. January 18—26.

3. Amedeus - Rock me, Amedeus! Catch the 2002 Director's Cut starring Tom Hulce on the big screen at the Redford Theatre. January 17—18.

4. The Rink at Campus Martius - Put your skates on and head to Campus Martius for a few laps around the rink. This is also the last weekend to admire the shiny lights of the Christmas Tree. January 17—20.

5. MLK Day: Bring the Dream to Life - Celebrate the 85th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Detroit Historical Museum. This free event has activities and programming scheduled throughout the day. January 20th.

1. Cinderella - The Moscow Festival Ballet, founded by Sergei Radchenko, performs this classic fairytale that will delight both children and adults. January 9—11.

2. Detroit Film Theatre's 40th Anniversary - To celebrate 40 fabulous years, the DFT is screening 10 films that they've shown over the years at the 1974 admission price of $2! January 10—12.

3. Art in the Stations - This short film explores the 15 major public works of art, and the artists that created them, in the Detroit People Mover stations. January 11th.

4. Tinker. Hack. Invent. Saturdays - Head to The Henry Ford and explore the science of luminescence and create your own glowing Avatar mask. January 11th.

5. Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde - WSU's Hilberry Theatre presents Kauffman's play about the very popular writer and playwright. January 10—11.

1. Winter Wonderland Weekend - Head to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House and enjoy outdoor fun with holiday music and lights, storytellers, carols, hot chocolate and holiday treats! Also, check out the Candlelight Stroll. December 20—22.

2. White Christmas - Catch the holiday classic starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney on the big screen at the Redford Theatre. December 20—21.

3. Winter Solstice Celebration: Countdown to Bliss - Kuhnhenn Brewing will tap several rare beers throughout the evening. Plus BBQ, live music and a heated, tented biergarten. December 20th.

4. Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village - Candle-lit paths, carriage and Model T rides, and live entertainment take you back to the holidays of the past. Santa, live reindeer, and fireworks cap off a fantastic evening. December 19-23 and 26-28.

5. Wild Lights - Get wild at the Detroit Zoo as over two million LED lights are strung on a half-mile trail. Activities include entertainment, arts and crafts, storytelling, ice carving and a Lego® holiday train display. December 20—23.
